Ranking the Audiobook Genres by Sales in 2026

January 10, 2026  |  News

Introduction

Once a year, I try to answer a simple question with the best public data we have: Which audiobook genres sell best (and worst)?

This is the January 2026 update, using the same approach as the 2024 and 2025 studies, so we can compare like with like and track what is genuinely shifting over time.

TL;DR (January 2026 snapshot): Audiobook demand by genre is remarkably stable year to year, but 2026 has one loud exception: Romance surged and also became less top-heavy, which is good news for midlist titles. The usual heavy hitters still dominate overall demand (Literature & Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Mystery/Thriller), but several non-fiction categories lost ground relative to the baseline this year. For narrators choosing mid-level projects, the cleanest "steady demand + healthier depth" signals show up in Romance and in tier-two workhorses like Genre Fiction, Thriller & Suspense, and Science Fiction.

Finding the data

Getting true sales figures for Audible is not really a thing, at least not in a way that's publicly accessible.

But Amazon, as the parent company of Audible, does give us something useful: overall Audible rank numbers for top titles inside each category. Those category pages are organised into tiers (top level genres, and second tier sub-genres, then a third tier that gets very niche).

It's not perfect. Genre classification is messy, books span multiple genres, and Amazon's shelving can be… creative. A romantasy title can plausibly sit in Fantasy or Romance, and some mega-bestsellers show up across a ridiculous number of categories at once. (That's merchandising, not taxonomy.)

Still, the data is consistent enough that when you pull it in the same way each year, patterns start to emerge.

The genre classification problem (and why it matters)

Genres are not clean boxes. They're overlapping circles.

Amazon's category structure reflects that, sometimes in a useful way, sometimes in a "what on earth are you doing?" way. Science Fiction and Fantasy share a top category. Horror is buried under Literature & Fiction at tier two. Literary Fiction is tucked away even deeper. Romance and Erotica are separated like two kids at a school disco.

So no, this is not a philosophical argument about what genre a book "really is." This is a practical argument about where Audible's audience attention is concentrated, using Amazon's own shelves as the playing field.

The dataset

For every tier one genre and every tier two sub-genre, I took a snapshot of the Audible overall ranks for books ranked 1 through 10 and book #100.

In 2024, I also gathered the full 11–99 set and found the curve was surprisingly linear across categories, so in later years I extrapolate 11–99 to save time without changing the overall result.

That gives me two outputs per genre:

  • Sales Score (relative popularity)
  • Die-off (how quickly the category drops off after the top sellers)

Sales Score (relative popularity)

I rank each category by the combined overall rank of its top 100 titles. The best-selling tier one category becomes the benchmark at 100. Everything else is measured relative to that benchmark, on a 0–100 scale where higher is better.

So if a category has a Sales Score of 20, it is roughly five times stronger than a category with a Sales Score of 4 on this relative scale.

The "die-off" figure

Sales Score tells us, "How big is this category compared to the best one?" Die-off tells us something different: "How brutal is it once you leave the top ten?"

Die-off is the difference between the overall rank of the #10 title and the #100 title inside that category. I use #10 rather than #1 because the very top slots often contain weird outliers and heavy merchandising placements that do not represent the category as a whole.

Interpretation is simple:

  • Low die-off: the category has depth. The midlist is healthier.
  • High die-off: the category is top-heavy. A few giants, then a cliff.

For narrators and producers choosing mid-level projects, die-off is often the more actionable number.

The big picture: what changed in 2026?

1) The top of the market is stable

Here's the first thing to know: the tier one top ten is identical across 2024, 2025, and 2026. Same ten genres. Same basic hierarchy.

If you were hoping for a dramatic genre revolution, I regret to inform you that listeners remain stubbornly consistent in their appetites.

2) Romance is the 2026 headline

Romance didn't just "do well." It surged.

  • Romance jumped from 48.39 (2025) to 78.56 (2026)
  • That's a +30.17 year-on-year move on a 0–100 scale
  • Die-off improved sharply, dropping from 13.83 to 5.53

That last point matters. It suggests Romance is not just dominated by a handful of mega titles. It has breadth.

If you're a narrator looking for a category where the midlist can still breathe, this is the strongest signal in the entire dataset.

3) Several big genres lost ground relative to the baseline

This is where I'm careful with language. These genres did not necessarily "sell less" in absolute terms (we do not have units). What we can say is that their relative position weakened compared to the #1 benchmark.

Notable tier one declines from 2025 to 2026:

  • Science Fiction & Fantasy: −12.57
  • Business & Careers: −12.32
  • Mystery, Thriller & Suspense: −8.22
  • Relationships, Parenting & Personal Development: −8.13
  • Politics & Social Sciences: −6.04
  • Health & Wellness: −5.91

The simplest interpretation: the fiction side, especially Romance, strengthened its share of attention in this snapshot.

4) The die-off story is mixed, but a few patterns stand out

A few tier one die-off patterns are worth calling out because they affect midlist viability:

  • Romance: die-off got much better (flatter curve)
  • Biographies & Memoirs: die-off improved a lot (less cliffy than last year)
  • Children's Audiobooks: die-off worsened and remains extreme (still the most top-heavy tier one category)
  • Comedy & Humor: die-off worsened (more top-heavy than last year)

If you're trying to choose solid midlist work, "top-heavy" categories demand a stronger edge: bigger author platform, stronger series, stronger packaging, or a very sharp niche hook.

Tier Two: where the real market signals live

Tier one tells you where the oceans are. Tier two tells you where the currents are.

The perennial engine room (top ten every year)

Seven tier two categories have remained top-ten across 2024, 2025, and 2026, which makes them the closest thing we have to "structural demand":

  • Science Fiction & Fantasy / Fantasy
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy / Science Fiction
  • Mystery, Thriller & Suspense / Thriller & Suspense
  • Literature & Fiction / Genre Fiction
  • Literature & Fiction / Action & Adventure
  • Literature & Fiction / Women's Fiction
  • Relationships, Parenting & Personal Development / Personal Development

These are the categories that keep showing up at the top no matter what.

The 2026 shift: romantasy pressure and genre fiction strength

A few tier two movements are especially telling:

  • Literature & Fiction / Genre Fiction rose strongly (+5.62) and became the #2 tier two category in 2026.
  • Romance / Fantasy rose (+3.49) and its die-off improved sharply.
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy / Science Fiction rose (+2.61) with a low die-off.

Meanwhile: Science Fiction & Fantasy / Fantasy is still the #1 tier two category, but it dropped notably (−11.44).

That combination looks like demand splitting across shelves, particularly in the fantasy ecosystem. If you've been watching the rise of romantasy and hybrid fantasy romance, this will not surprise you.

A caution on LGBTQ+ category behaviour

At tier one, LGBTQ+ improved slightly in Sales Score, but die-off spiked hard. At tier two, LGBTQ+ Romance-related subcategories show gains, but also higher die-off.

This is exactly the kind of pattern you get when a small category is dominated by a few cross-listed blockbusters. In other words: interesting, but don't overread it.

Advice for narrators choosing mid-level projects

Here's the practical bit. If you're trying to pick projects that have a reasonable chance of finding listeners without needing to become the #1 title in the world, you want two things:

  • Decent Sales Score (there's actually an audience here)
  • Reasonable die-off (the audience exists beyond the top ten)

1) Favour categories with depth, not just flash

In 2026, the cleanest "midlist-friendly" signals cluster around:

  • Romance (tier one), especially Romance subgenres with improving die-off
  • Literature & Fiction / Genre Fiction
  • Mystery, Thriller & Suspense / Thriller & Suspense
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy / Science Fiction
  • Literature & Fiction / Horror (still solid, still viable)

These are categories where you can plausibly do well without needing to beat the top one percent of titles.

2) Be cautious in top-heavy categories unless the project is unusually strong

If a category has a steep die-off, the lesson is not "never do it." The lesson is: do it only when you have an advantage.

Examples of "advantage":

  • a proven series with readthrough
  • a strong author platform
  • publisher push
  • a book that is already performing well in ebook/print
  • a concept that nails a hungry micro-niche

Children's and Comedy are the obvious tier one examples here. You can absolutely win there, but the midlist is less forgiving.

3) Use cross-genre hybrids to ride strong shelves

Some of the healthiest moves happen at the borders:

  • Romance / Fantasy and Romance / Paranormal sit right where two big listening habits collide.
  • Thriller elements inside Romance (romantic suspense) can pull in two audiences.
  • Genre Fiction is basically a giant funnel for a lot of commercial storytelling.

If you narrate in a hybrid space, you can often target higher-demand shelves without abandoning your strengths.

4) Remember what this data is (and is not)

This is a snapshot of relative ranks in January. It is not units sold. It is not revenue. It is not a guarantee of future performance.

But as a directional tool, especially when repeated year after year using the same method, it is one of the most useful public signals we have.

Closing thought

The main takeaway for 2026 is simple: Romance got bigger and healthier.

And while the big genre hierarchy remains stable, the subgenre currents suggest continued strength in commercial fiction, especially in spaces where Fantasy and Romance blend.
