Exploring the Ebook/Audiobook Ranking Connection
December 11, 2023 | Articles
As an audiobook narrator, I’ve always been intrigued by the factors that propel audiobooks to the top of the Audible charts. Do these elements overlap with those driving ebooks to bestseller status on Amazon? To find out, I set off on an investigative journey into the relationship between ebook sales rank and audiobook sales rank.
I analyzed around 750 titles, each existing as both an audiobook and an ebook, spanning various genres, ratings, and review counts. The goal was to discover whether a bestselling ebook reliably translates into a top-ranking audiobook. I also considered variables like ebook length and audiobook pricing.
The methodology involved correlation analysis and linear regression modelling to understand the relationship between the sales ranks of these two formats.
Findings: The Surprising Truth
Contrary to popular belief, there is only a marginal connection between an ebook’s success on Amazon and its audiobook counterpart’s performance on Audible. The analysis revealed a slight positive correlation, akin to two dancers mirroring each other’s steps, albeit not perfectly. A high-ranking ebook often, but not always, indicated a similarly successful audiobook.
Enhanced scatter plot of Audiobook vs. Ebook ranks across ~750 titles. R-squared: 0.39.
The linear regression model, which attempted to predict audiobook rankings based on ebook success, demonstrated moderate predictive capability. It turns out that only about 33% of an audiobook’s ranking appears to be influenced by the ebook’s performance.
I also explored whether audiobook length correlates with higher sales, but found this link to be minimal. It appears that the duration of an audiobook isn’t as significant a factor as I had hypothesized.
Beyond the Numbers: The Quest for the Remaining Two-Thirds
Acknowledging that ebook sales account for only a portion of an audiobook’s success, we must explore other contributing factors. These are likely qualitative elements:
Cover Design
While impactful for ebooks, do captivating covers also enhance audiobook sales? Since audiobook covers are displayed at thumbnail size on Audible, the effect may differ from print or ebook. Quantifying and assessing cover quality’s influence on sales is a natural next step.
Genre Clarity
Previous studies indicate that genre ambiguity negatively impacts ebook and print sales. Does this hold true for audiobooks? What cues do listeners rely on to set their expectations before pressing play? A title that clearly signals its genre may have an edge.
Narrator Following
Setting aside celebrity narrations, how significantly does a narrator’s existing fanbase affect an audiobook’s success? Some narrators develop loyal followings who will buy almost anything they record. This aspect warrants exploration to understand its real impact on sales rankings.
Reviews and Ratings
While reviews and ratings are widely thought to influence sales, the data from this study suggests their effect might be less pronounced than anticipated. The relationship between review count and sales rank was weaker than expected, a finding that deserves deeper investigation.
Conclusion: Navigating the Audiobook Landscape
The world of audiobooks is intricate, with no straightforward path to predicting success. Although the finding that ebook rank only explains a third of audiobook performance might initially seem disappointing, it actually opens up a realm of possibility. It means there are levers beyond the book’s existing print reputation that narrators and producers can pull.
Understanding what fills that remaining two-thirds is where the real opportunity lies, and it’s the kind of question Sleuthy was built to help answer.
